AMUMIN Sereen vs. Terra: Which Model for Your Hajj or Umrah?

Two shoes, two jobs

Before you pack for Umrah or Hajj, separate the journey into the two kinds of walking you will actually do. There is the tawaf itself, and the walking on smooth stone inside the Masjid al-Haram. And there is everything else: the walks to and from the Haram, the travel between Makkah and Madinah, the days in Mina and Arafat if you are performing Hajj. These are different surfaces, different durations, and different heat profiles. A single pair rarely does both jobs well.

AMUMIN is a small Dutch handmade leather brand. We make two complementary models: Sereen for the mataf and masjid interiors, and Terra for everything outside. This article walks through the differences so you can choose, or decide to take both from our Earth Collection.

Sereen: indoor leather shoe for masjid and mataf

Sereen is an indoor leather shoe. It is handmade in Bursa from vegetable-tanned full-grain leather with a thin leather sole. Sizes run from EU 35 to EU 46. Colours: cream, beige, black, brown.

What Sereen is for

• Regular (non-ihram) tawaf, for men and women.
• Women performing Hajj and Umrah, including tawaf in ihram.
• Walking inside the Masjid al-Haram on marble.
• Prayer rooms, hotel rooms, breaks between rites.
• Home use afterwards. Many people tell us Sereen becomes their permanent wudu and prayer shoe.

What Sereen is not for

• Men in ihram. Sereen is a closed shoe. Most madhahib prohibit closed shoes for men in ihram; they must wear open sandals.
• Hot outdoor asphalt, where the sole is too thin.
• Wet outdoor conditions.
• Long walks on rough pavement.

Terra: the between-sites walker

Terra is our outdoor leather shoe. It keeps the same low-drop, natural-movement philosophy as Sereen but adds outdoor protection. Full-grain vegetable-tanned leather upper, barefoot last, flexible outdoor sole. Sizes EU 36 to EU 41. Colours: cream, brown, black.

What Terra is for

• The walk from your hotel to the Haram.
• Transit: between taxis, in airports, between bus stops.
• Madinah sightseeing and the walks around Masjid an-Nabawi's courtyards.
• Hajj days in Mina and Arafat, for women and for men outside ihram periods.

What Terra is not for

• Men in ihram. Terra is closed; the ihram rules require open sandals.
• Mountain hiking. Terra is a city and pilgrimage shoe, not a trekker.

Pilgrimage scenarios

Scenario 1: Umrah

Women freely use Sereen inside the Haram and Terra for outdoor walks, including during the ihram period — women have no ihram footwear restriction. Men wear ihram-permissible open sandals during the ihram period (from the miqat through the completion of the Umrah rites) and switch to Sereen or Terra afterwards, for regular tawaf, masjid visits, and outdoor walking.

Scenario 2: Hajj

The same logic scales up. Women freely use Sereen and Terra throughout. Men alternate according to their ihram state: open sandals while in ihram, Sereen and Terra otherwise. For Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah, the walking is mixed and long, and Terra is designed for this. For the moments inside the Haram and for prayer time, Sereen.

Scenario 3: Winter Umrah

The same fiqh applies — ihram rules do not change with the weather. The practical difference is warmth. Sereen's leather insulates against cold marble as well as hot. Terra keeps feet warm outside. Our European customers order this combination most often in the cool months.

For whom

• First-time pilgrims: Sereen for ritual comfort and spiritual focus, once you are out of ihram (if applicable).
• Experienced hajjis: both models, because the outdoor walking is always underestimated.
• Elderly pilgrims or those with foot issues: both, and take time to break them in at home for several weeks before travel.
• Women performing Umrah in modest dress: Sereen in a neutral colour integrates invisibly; Terra in cream or brown likewise.

Sizing

Sereen and Terra share the same barefoot last: wide toe box, zero drop. If you are between sizes, size up for Sereen (leather moulds) and stay true for Terra (the outdoor sole is less forgiving). Full details in our size guide.

Ordering

Order from our Earth Collection to see both models side by side. We ship worldwide. We recommend ordering at least four weeks before departure to allow for break-in: wear them daily at home for two to three weeks so the leather conforms to your foot before you ever take a step on the mataf.

If you can only take one shoe, let it be the right one for the purpose. If you can take two, let them complement each other. A good pilgrimage is one where you forget your feet entirely, because your feet are looked after — and because what you wear respects the rules of the state you are in.
